Case Study - Jamie Thraves

Jamie Thraves is a director. His journey began by making a few films at University where he created a award winning short film which allowed him to acquire a method in which to have connections with the video production company Factory Films.

In total he shot 3 short films and all of their budgets were around £5000, which is quite low.

Later on Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two best known videos and thanks to his work and effort, they were accepted.

Radiohead's "Just" was one of his music videos and in my opinion it was very satisfying to watch, because it's story was told very clearly however he was still able to grab all of my attention and focus even after the video ended. This was because of the fact, that I was left all by myself to wonder what it was the man in his video said that made all the other people lie on the ground as he did.

It was shot in 3 days with a budget of £100,000

The second music video he directed was the music video "The Scientist" by Coldplay. The budget for this music video was twice as much as "Just" by Radiohead and so it was created with a budget of £200,000 however it was also shot in 3 days, just like the music video "Just".

This music video in my opinion was executed very well because of it's very original idea of lip syncing and playing the recording backwards. This as a result makes it seem as though the video had been created with effects however it was only lip-synced in a very difficult yet interesting manner. In addition this was created in 3 days which is very impressive considering the way in which they created the music video.

Based on these two amazing music videos, I am convinced that Jamie Thraves is a very talented and creative director. So far he has shown many abstract and original ideas and he has performed them with a lot of accuracy and efficiency. It is no wonder he was able to receive and award for the short films he created during university.

His most recent work however, is "Song for Lisa" by Japanese Popstars. Which was made with a budget of £20,000 and was created in 2 days. The music video expresses the past of Lisa's life when she was just a child where her mum was happy however at the same time, the music video reflects her reality in her present time. Where her mum is no longer who she once was and where he life has become less as colourful and bright compared to when she was young.

Most importantly, for Jamie Thraves. His aims were not be set on music videos but instead he desired to work in the film industry. The music videos were only a way for him to get into the film business and as of right now he has only shot three features. The Low Down, The Cry of the Owl and Treacle Jr.

In addition, Jamie Thraves has some tips on making music videos. He said when using lyrics you should try not to be too literal as well as his belief that you should go with the emotion of the lyrics as soon as you feel it.

You'll see in the music video "Broken Record" by Katy B, that he has actually applied his tip and that actually in all of his music videos he does this because as the audience you can feel how he has gone with the emotion of the lyrics based on the visual aspect of the music video which he directed.  In this music video you can relate the visuals and audio allowing for the emotion and message of the music video to be amplified.  Jamie Thraves does this through his directing by ensuring that he applies a lot of the techniques which Andrew Goodwin thinks is important such as the male gaze, the camera work, the editing based on tempo and style and the Mise-en-Scene which sets the scenes and aura of his music videos.
