Storyboard

In order for me and Laura to record our ideas and decisions during most of our research and production meetings, we needed a way in which to record them. As a result we decided to record and start using our ideas by creating a storyboard outlining what we thought our music video would look like in a rough manner. It took almost 3 consecutive days until we had finished our story board and although it was stressful we were successful and were able to see our idea briefly come to life. After we had finished the story board it also helped us to figure out what to shoot first for the music video.

Production Meeting 1

This was our first meeting whereby me and Laura were on the journey of finding songs that we could use for our music video. We did this on the internet where we searched on several sites possessing unsigned music. dailyunsigned.com was the main website at which I spent a few days searching for songs by listening to each artist one by one. It wasn't long until me and Laura finally found a few songs which we found to be just the right speed as well as just the right tone.

As a result we ended up having in total 5 usable songs to pick from which in turn allowed us to take our first step into producing our music video. During our search for our song the main things we were looking for were a good tempo, a variety of beats and finally good lyrics and voices we we thought could be easily lip synced.

Production meeting 2 Choosing the Track using Screen Test

During the process of choosing our song we had some trouble deciding between a couple songs. The songs that we had fighting for the position of being the song in our music video was the song "if you wanna" by the Paris Youth Foundation and the song "Hand in my Pocket" by Kassassin. Both songs had a potential to be the song we'd choose however me and Laura were split on which songs we should choose. As a result we did some screening for each of the songs so as to review them with other people and acquire their views.

Hand in my pocket - Kassassin

After creating the screening for this songs the feedback we received stated that the lip syncing looked very convincing even though I hadn't fully memorised the song and had to refer back to the lyrics on my phone. In addition they also said that the song and the voice fitted my appearance and attitude more than it did when they watched the other screening for the song "If you wanna".

If you wanna - Paris Youth Foundation

On the other hand the feedback we received for this screening was quite a bit more negative. Most of the people stated that this song's vocals were very unique and abstract leading to the downfall of the lip syncing looking very anywhere near convincing. In addition to this the song's pace and the lyrics were said to be too fast and did not have any very clear pauses however on the positive side the people who watched this screening did say that the lyrics were very nice for a love song.

In the end me and Laura came up with a unanimous decision and chose "Hand in my pocket" by Kassasin, based on the fact that it seemed easier to lip sync than the sing "If you wanna" by the Paris Youth Foundation. In turn because of that fact we knew that "Hand in my pocket" would be the more better option as it had a better potential to be executed well by us as it would be easier to record for the lip syncing section.

Production Meeting 3

In this meeting me and my partner Laura discussed which locations we would be filming in and as to why they would be the best. It turns out that the locations we agreed on were Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Street due to the fact that they were busy most of the time and full of people. This would in turn help us film some of our scenes which required an abundance of people in the background.

On the other hand during this meeting we also talked about when we would be filming and we did this by looking at the timetables where the rooms we needed for the band shot were free. Sadly the rooms were not free whenever we did have lessons however we were able to accept that most of the filming on weekdays would be done after school. In addition to this we agreed that most of the filming taking place at certain locations would be done during our weekends allowing for us to have enough time to travel to our desired destinations at the time we wanted to shoot our scenes.

In conclusion, this production meeting allowed us to confirm on a rough scale what we would be filming, where we would be filming it as well as how and why we would be.

Production Meeting 4

This was our last production meeting and during this time we aimed to fill in all our planning documents by hand. As you can see in the image below Laura was still refining the story board a bit more to prepare it for the animatic. whilst I on the other hand started the filling in the treatment sheet, Risk Assessment sheet etc. In conclusion the production meeting was quite a busy one, we had lots do however thankfully we were able to complete them and after doing so we transferred all the data digitally into our blogs.

Filming the Music Video - 1st Day

Our first day of filming, was on the drummers introduction. We decided to do this first because he was the only actor available on the latest date. In addition, his scene was actually quite short and not very hard to accomplish. In turn, I then used the camera and tripod to capture footage according to our Storyboard and Animatic. Surprisingly, I found out that we couldn't film as much as we originally planned for his scene because the recruiter (Josh) was unavailable however in an attempt to try and get around that issue we attempted to film the drummers (Daniel) scenes in a way that would make use of the 180 degree rule and influence the audience at a later stage after editing that, the drummer and recruiter were in the same room and that they interacted.

Thankfully we were able to film the drummers scene however we still didn't have enough footage to be able to edit a large portion of the music video. In spite of this, our first day of filming was successful though, we could have acquired more footage for other scenes on the same day, had all the actors been available.

Filming the Music Video - 2nd Day

Our second day of filming took place at Oxford Street. originally the bullying scene was meant to be recorded there however due to unexpected complications the actor was unavailable and so we had to film it another time at another location. Nevertheless our second day of filming was still a challenging one. Personally as the actor, it was very difficult to get into character and stay consistent whilst lip syncing to the music. There were many people there which was good for our establishing shots for our first scene however it did put a lot more pressure on me on the scenes where I had to lip sync.

Overall, we were able to explore Oxford's streets and although our main camera ran out of battery, we  were able to continue filming the rest of the scenes at the underground station using our smartphones, which didn't have too much of a bad quality. However we were able to acquire some interesting abstract shots like the low foot shots and the unique over the elbow shot which looked very similar to an over the shoulder however the head of the character would be shown less.

Editing The Music Video - 1

After our first filming session for our music video, me and Laura quickly decided between ourselves that one of us would be editing most of the music video. We both the attempted to edit the first few clips we recorded in sync with the song and based on what both of us produced, we would decide who would edit. As a result, I took up the mantle and Laura was given the opportunity to focus on the Dijipak and Advert.

In spite of that, our first editing session like usual was probably the most difficult. Using the footage we had recorded for the intro of the music video we had to be able to create an opening that would captivate and keep the interest of the audience. I was able to do exactly that with the use of markers which provided me with the ability to edit accurately in sync with the musics beats, which in turn made our opening look a lot more exciting!

Regardless, since it was our first editing session and we only had our first footage available to us, we still had lots of gaps to fill in order to complete our music video. However after our first edits, we were able to see our music video slowly coming to life because of both our opinions and ideas on what pace to edit at, as well as which clips to use next.

Seen as though it was our first editing day for the music video, it was also quite rough around the edges however this wasn't much of a bother for us because at that current time, all we needed to acquire was a brief idea on as to what the intro to our music video would look like.

Editing The Music Video - 2

After we recorded footage in a span of 2 days, we were back once again to edit our music video for the second time. The second time around wasn't as difficult because in our first attempt to edit we had used markers to mark all the beats in the song. This had helped us in our 2nd day of editing as it laid out the guidelines on how we should edit the rest of our music video, according to our storyboard and our animatic.

In addition to that, we now had more access to a larger quantity of footage enabling us to fill in large amounts of gaps, allowing us to edit to a higher quality. As a result, we were able to be more creative and even attempt to try and add some effects with what we had currently edited. For example, we had messed around with using transition effects like dip to black to try and split one scene of the music video to another.

Having more of the music video edited, provided me and Laura with more freedom to try and make our own effects to reflect our theme and genre of rebellion. To do this we looked at and tried several effects however we found that the brightness and contrast effect would allow us to do that. In turn, we altered and changed it's options so that we could create and save a preset of that effect, calling it the Rebel effect. Below is an example of what the original footage looks like and what it looks like after applying it.

However not all our footage were the same in terms of it's brightness and contrast, so we had to manually alter those in accordance with the other clips to help with effectiveness of continuity and cinematography.

In conclusion, that's all we basically did on our second day of editing. We were able to make a significant amount of progress but we were still a large distant away from finishing. However thanks to last years project we were able to do it more efficiently knowing the basics of what to do and not to do.
